The Creative Lab organized by BEES 55 and Rwanda Polytechnic consists of competition of 20 young people aged between 15 and 35, from Rwanda and other different countries of Africa.
They will compete on the theme of “innovations that will boost smart cities in Africa”.

The CREATIVE LAB will facilitate a process that strengthens effective youth participation in the planning and implementation of the sustainable development goals and smart Cities.

The CREATIVE LAB is expected to bring together about two hundred participants with different background from Africa and the Diaspora.

The CREATIVE LAB will also create an inclusive platform for youth enabling them to review the progress of the SDGs, share ideas, experiences and innovative approaches for effectively contributing to the SDG framework and its implementation. It will allow young people to voice their ideas and concerns and make suggestions directly to policy makers and stakeholders.

The selected candidates will gather for a 7 days boot camp in Kigali ( from 11th-17th May) prior to the Transform Africa Summit 2019 where they will be involved in 3 activities:

1. An ideation Lab: aimed at helping them to develop and prototype innovative ideas. The session is aimed at increasing the capacity of the youth to building a creative mindset through specific tools and practices. They will be accompanied with professionals in design thinking, personal development etc.

2. A Cartoon Camp Challenge helps the young people to project themselves into the future. The Cartoon Camp promotes a mindset conducive to innovation. Building dreams is at the root of any innovation project. The Cartoon Camp will create an innovation-friendly environment that facilitates the transformation of good ideas into useful products and services to support the transition towards sustainable cities in Africa.

3. Hackathon competition: during which participants will conceptualize, create and plan prototypes of IT solutions to speed up the transition towards sustainable and smart cities in Africa. Participants will have 2 days to plan, design and create prototypes of smart digital solutions for sustainable cities. They will have been selected based on the projects submitted through a storyboard of 4 pages and schematized according competition criteria.

Before the Hackathon, participants will have a 1day incubation session with International Guest-Coaches the field of UX design, 3D, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), inventive architectural and design thinking, personal development etc.

The Hackathon will take place during the Transform Africa Summit 2019 where the selected Designers will develop prototypes in the presence of the participants to the Summit.

The 3 best Young Innovators will be awarded during the Transform Africa Summit 2019 in Kigali, Rwanda.
