JOB BRIEF

Our Legal Manager is responsible for all legal matters pertaining to the business of the company. From drafting agreements and contracts and coordinating negotiations to analyzing public policy and law impact on the business and writing white papers for internal and external stakeholders, the Legal Manager will work across the organization to ensure legal compliance. This role also serves as the Company Secretary, coordinating the board of directors’ meetings and company governance affairs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Structure, negotiate, draft, and review a wide variety of agreements and contracts in a timely manner.
  • Conduct legal research as needed and synthesize legal concepts for general business use.
  • Partner with and manage outside counsel related to specific legal issues and litigation.
  • Create and maintain an accessible contract management system and monitor contract renewals proactively.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of relevant legislative changes and their impact on the business.
  • Develop and execute a long term strategy to achieve the legal and regulatory changes necessary for our products and business to thrive. White paper policy formulation; stakeholder mapping; coalition building and maintenance with government policy makers.
  • Review the legal risks involved in various business deals and share the same with the management.
  • Act as the owner of company’s IP assets such as trademarks, copyrights, patents, brand names (registrations & renewals).
  • Coordinate with Management for consultation and strategic direction on Compliance, Governance and Risk Management.
  • Partner closely with operations and engineering teams within the company to align government policy to product strategies and business needs.
  • Serve as a thought leader to senior management and the various teams on legal affairs and other business matters.
  • Coordinate board meetings per governance standards and ensure timely execution of resolutions and adequate engagement with the board and the team  the company.
  • Perform other tasks the business may require.

REQUIREMENTS

  • You have excellent writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills, including clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • You have great people skills and ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • You have an ability to work independently while being able to contribute promptly and successfully to cross-functional teams.
  • You are a proactive and highly motivated self-starter, possess a meticulous approach to detail with great analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Your personal values include confidentiality, professionalism and integrity.
  • You have excellent business judgment and a focus on business outcomes.
  • You are comfortable challenging the status quo and have the ability to address conflict and difficult issues in a professional and effective manner.
  • You are familiar with internet technologies and the surrounding policy environments, or have an ability to quickly get up to speed on complex technical and regulatory issues.
  • You have a deep network in the industry to tap into expertise in tech policy, law and compliance, litigation matters etc.
  • You have 5 years of experience in a corporate legal role in a leadership position.
  • You are fluent in English and Kinyarwanda. French is an added advantage
  • You have a law degree.
