The Minor Foundation for Major Challenges is accepting LOIs from all over the world to fund communication projects which mitigate anthropogenic climate change. The grants program aim to support  projects that have the greatest impact on influencing public opinion and increasing political support for cutting green house gas emissions.

Deadline: 22 March 2019

Eligibility

The foundation welcomes applications from all over the world.

They are looking for innovative and experimental projects with high impact.

All projects must centre on communication.

Priorities

  • Support communication that creates change.
  • Prioritise politically oriented communication.
  • Support new voices, actors and narratives in the climate debate, and value diversity.
  • Innovative messages and strategies are more important than the innovative use of channels and media.
  • Support experienced organisations and networks.

Although they may have supported such projects in the past, they will no longer finance:

  • Exhibitions, unless they are touring
  • Adaptation projects, unless they have a mitigation component
  • Tree planting
  • Scientific research
  • Practical application of mitigation technologies, unless there is a significant information component

Objectives

The Foundation’s objective is to promote efforts to protect the natural environment, primarily through the support of national and international projects.

The Foundation’s chief priority is to prevent or limit man-made global climate changes.

The Foundation’s work focuses on influencing public opinion, providing inspiration, changing attitudes, spreading information, etc., all meant to have an impact on decision-makers in society. The ultimate goal is to reach as many people as possible in the hope of limiting and helping to prevent global climate changes.

The Foundation will support efforts which are innovative, experimental and untested, and will prioritise means and measures which are likely to have the strongest possible impact at any given time.

The Foundation will concentrate efforts on projects which might otherwise be difficult to put into effect, and intends to support venturesome projects that can, if successful, yield great results. Given the choice between many small projects and a few larger projects, the Foundation will generally select the larger ones.

Application process

First of all you need to make sure that your idea fits with the requirements of the foundation. The secretary of the board sorts out all LOIs/initial applications that are not in line with the trusts deed, and these end up in the bin. You will, however, receive an offical message saying that your project proposal has not been approved. We are now left with a pile of relevant LOIs/initial applications. Hopefully, one of them is yours.

Request for a full application

The board only meets six to seven times a year, which means it may take several months from we have received the LOI/initial application till the board makes its decision. At the first possible board meeting the LOIs/intial applications received from the electronic application form will be reviewed. If your LOI attracts the board`s attention, you will then be asked to send us a full application. In the letter with a request for a full application from the foundation there are questions that you have to answer, and you will also have to provide a letter of reference. You will also be asked for a budget for the proposed project.

The decision by the board of directors

The board of directors carefully considers each proposal described in the full applications. Some are declined, some are approved. In the case of approval, you will then receive a grant letter, stating the conditions on which the grant is given. You have to return this grant letter with your signature, as a confirmation that your organisation has agreed to the conditions for the grant.

Immediately after the board meeting, all applicants are informed.
