VSO, the world’s leading international non-governmental organization, operates on a powerful principle: creating a fair world for everyone by working through volunteers. The organization doesn’t just deliver aid; it empowers communities by placing local people at the heart of their own development. This approach, which VSO calls “primary actors,” means that the solutions for sustainable, local-led change are defined by the very people who will benefit from them.

In 2022/23, VSO’s model was put into action by over 7,700 dedicated volunteers who helped nearly 11 million people in 35 countries. The organization focuses on those most often left behind by society, including people living in extreme poverty, those with disabilities, and individuals who face discrimination, violence, and conflict. The work is not about providing temporary fixes, but about building long-term capacity for change from within.
