ICCROM seeks a Project Officer in its Headquarters in Rome to lead, coordinate and deliver the project “Towards Sustainable Development in Africa: Transformative Capacity Building to Advance Craftmanship in Cultural Heritage Conservation” in line with the Organization’s Strategic Directions and Priority Areas.

Type of contract: Fixed-Term

Term: One year (Renewable depending on funds availability – six-month probation period)

Key Responsibilities

 

The Project Officer will be based in Rome at the ICCROM Headquarters and will act as the Project Coordinator. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating the project’s strategic and day-to-day management, ensuring it aligns with ICCROM’s mission and the Mattei Plan objectives.
  • Supervising all stages of implementation, from research and training to toolkit development and certification.
  • Establishing a monitoring and evaluation system to track the project’s impact.
  • Coordinating activities with Fabbrica di San Pietro of the Holy See and local partners in Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Egypt, and Tunisia.
  • Facilitating intercultural dialogue and knowledge exchange between African artisans and craft masters in the Vatican and partner institutions.
  • Mobilizing contributions to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
  • Guiding and supporting project personnel to foster a collaborative team culture.
  • Preparing transparent reports on project progress and expenditures for stakeholders.
  • Leading risk analysis and adaptive planning.
  • Liaising with other ICCROM teams to ensure project alignment with the organization’s strategic framework.
  • Collaborating with finance and administration teams for effective budgetary and operational assistance.
  • Representing the project at international conferences and meetings.

Required qualifications

Education

 

  • Advanced degree in project management, international relations, development studies, or business administration.
  • A degree in heritage conservation or cultural entrepreneurship is a plus.

 

Work Experience

 

  • At least 8 years of international experience in project management, including:
    • Managing budgets of over €1M.
    • Planning and implementing complex, multi-country projects.
    • Monitoring, evaluation, and donor reporting.
  • Proven experience in developing innovative heritage conservation or cultural programs in diverse settings.
  • Experience working in Africa is preferred.

 

Skills & Knowledge

 

  • Strong understanding of capacity building, intercultural education, and business incubation.
  • Knowledge of the cultural dimension of international relations and the ability to build relationships across political landscapes.
  • Good understanding of the UN Common System.

 

Languages

 

  • Fluent in both written and spoken English and French.
  • Working knowledge of Italian is highly desirable, or a willingness to learn it quickly..
