Associate Mechanical and Plumbing Engineer

The MASS Engineering team has grown significantly over the last five years, and now employs 20 staff across Structural, Civil and MEP disciplines. We are looking to hire an Associate Mechanical & Plumbing Engineer with experience in sustainable design and building physics to join our Kigali office. This collaborative individual will support our multi-disciplinary Engineering Team and play a key role in the design and construction supervision of building services for MASS projects. You will lead the M&P design of medium to large projects, and will be responsible for guiding and leading the junior engineers working for you. A key aspect of the MASS approach to M&P engineering is a desire to integrate innovative sustainable and low-energy solutions wherever possible. You will be responsible for researching and implementing appropriate technologies on our projects. Once projects reach site you will work alongside the site team to monitor the contractor’s work, ensuring that it is aligned with the design, and leading the response to contractor queries and requests.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads delivery of coordinated mechanical (HVAC) and plumbing design in line with budget, programme and project mission statement
  • Works collaboratively with MASS architects, structural, civil and electrical engineers
  • Ensures that M&P designs are produced in accordance with MASS Engineering quality management standards
  • Researches and implements sustainable solutions
  • Manages and trains junior engineering staff
  • Supports MASS architecture in appropriate concept and scheme designs
  • Works collaboratively with subconsultants, contractors and suppliers to achieve quality solutions and end products

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Degree in science or engineering with strong basis in mechanical systems, physics and mathematics
  • Ability to manage and deliver a medium project effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent environmental, mechanical and plumbing design expertise, including passive and active cooling systems, natural and mechanical ventilation, rainwater and foul water drainage and hot and cold water services etc.
  • Ability to use energy and thermal modelling software such as IES and EnergyPlus, or ability to conduct complex building and system analysis in Excel
  • Ability to produce design documentation for all project stages, including drawings, specifications and design reports
  • Ability to manage others to produce design work
  • Strong interdisciplinary coordination skills
  • Understanding of typical construction practices
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively both verbally and non-verbally to various audiences
  • Positive and proactive attitude with an emphasis on design quality and attention to detail
  • Chartered or near-Chartered Engineer with recognised engineering institution
  • Relevant Masters degree or other specialist training an advantage
  • Familiar with Autodesk software (AutoCAD; Revit)
  • Experience overseeing building services installation through construction
  • Experience working in construction in Rwanda or East Africa
  • Experience in producing Bills of Quantities and reviewing project costing  advantage
