TITLE: Book Development and Use Intern

ROLE PURPOSE:

Save the Children is seeking an Intern for an 8-month contract to work closely on the project funded by APIF (Africa Publishing Innovation Fund): The Project aims at supporting the community libraries in building the capacity of children in using digital resources in literacy, as well as strenthen parents’ and community’s capacity in supporting their children in using digital literacy materials. The BDU Intern will be responsible of following up all the project’s field activities, and monitor the implementation progress, while documenting the evidence and best practices. This role works closely with Reading Ready Team both in planning and execution of project activities.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Education Programme Manager

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Programme Planning and Implementation Assistance
  • Support the planning and execution of community librarians trainings, meetings, and other activities that aim at digital reading in the community; assisting in book quality assurance, documenting, and ensuring that project files are established and maintained.
  • Sit on the Book Review Committee and contribute to book evaluation and book selection.
  • Maintain a collection of Book Development and Use (BDU) materials, including all books, posters and other materials.
  • Be the custodian of the database of the project digital reading materials; record and maintain them regularly.
  • Upload digital books on reading devices as required and following project protocols. Define or update classification and mode of operation of the activity.
  • Distribute digital devices with uploaded materials to participating community libraries.
  • Support in convening a network of community libraries, their stakeholders and others interested in creating and sustaining the quality of children’s books available in Rwanda.
  • Assist in book procurement, sorting and distribution to community libraries throughout Rwanda.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Education Manager.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) support
  • Facilitate program monitoring activities including monitoring materials distribution to program beneficiaries
  • Provide support in project evaluation activities
  • Create and maintain a database for local publishing sector actors activities
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring monitoring data is entered and information used to inform project decision making
  • Identify and document key lessons learned from the project including case studies and success stories.
  • Logistical support
  •  Prepare all procurement requests related to the Publishing activities
  •  Give any other logistical support for the BDU team

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • University degree in library studies, social sciences, art studies, language and literature and any other relevant discipline;
  • Ability to develop constructive relationships with a wide range of partners, including children, community librarians, artists, entrepreneurs, government workers, communities and local authorities;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Kinyarwanda and English, verbally and in writing;
  • Understanding of and commitment to SCI mission, values and child rights-based programming approaches;
  • Capacity to adapt and to learn quickly;
  • Good team work spirit s well as the ability to work independently;
  • Ownership and accountability of own work;
  • Strong time management and organizational skills;
  •  Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.

Desirable

Exposure or direct experience within the children’s books industry (linked to publishers, writers, editors, illustrators, designers, booksellers, and opinion leaders)

Demonstrated passion for children’s book publishing and children’s rights to learn and read

Fluency in Kinyarwanda and English.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Experience in supporting beneficiary and partners’ mentoring and coaching;

Experience in facilitating training and workshops;

Enjoying to work in remote areas, or to have intensive travels to the field.

Computer knowledge (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams).
