Call for PhD Scholarship Applications in Economics

The School of Economics at the University of Rwanda (UR) in partnership with the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg calls for applications for 3 PhD scholarships to PhD candidates to be admitted to the newly launched Economics PhD program. The program is run jointly with the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg (UoG), one of the most pretigious Economics Departments in Europe and around the world. However, the PhD degree will be awarded by UR. The PhD program involves two years of core and specialization courses. The first-year core economics courses will be taught at UR’s campus jointly by professors from UoG, UR and other universities in the region. The second-year specialization courses will be taught both at the UR’s and UoG’s campuses. There will be joint supervision of PhD dissertations by professors from UoG and UR, with expected duration of 3 years for the completion of the PhD with possibility of extension of one year. The scholarship is generously funded by the Swedish international Development Agency for Cooperation (Sida), and will cover stipends while in Sweden, fieldwork Research grant, and trips to participate in international conferences and regular visits at the University of Gothenburg. Scholarship recipients are expected to be associated with UR and serve the school of Economics for a minimum of 4 years after their graduation from the program.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Economics/Agricultural Economics/ /Econometrics with outstanding grades
  • Should be Rwandan by nationality
  • Research (research assistantship, publications in listed journals) and teaching experiences will be valued

Application criteria

Interested applicants are required to submit scanned copies of the following documents to the email: economicsscholarships@gmail.com , by August 30, 2019 at the latest. Application received beyond the deadline will not be processed. The applicant is required to submit the following:

  • A one-page application letter motivating why the applicant should be considered
  • Certified copies of Bachelor and Master’s degrees and transcripts
  • Copies of Master’s thesis (soft copy)
  • Updated CV
  • Recommendation letters from at least two academic and / or professional referees
  • A maximum 5 pages research proposal in an economics area

Official transcripts will have to be submitted before admission to the program. Interviews with shortlisted applicants will be conducted in mid-September and decision and accepted candidates will begin classes at the end of September
