Calls for Proposals for NCST Excellent Research Grant

Background

The Law No 40 of 16.08.2018 establishing the National Council for Science and Technology (NCS), also assigns it with mandate of managing the National Research and Innovation Fund (NRIF).The NRIF is envisaged to be major vehicle through which the Government of Rwanda provides research and innovation funding that is aimed at stimulating social economic growth in accordance with the national development agenda. NCST has established an “Excellent Research Grant” as one of the funding instruments towards supporting the growth of a portfolio of research projects that will create new knowledge and enable breakthroughs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) areas in Rwanda.

Focus: Fundamental or Applied Research

Areas: ICT, Agriculture, Health, Energy, Mining and Natural Resources, Manufacturing, Climate change, areas of special opportunity for Rwanda.

Eligible applicants: Scientists and researchers, from local public or private research institutions and Higher Learning institutions.

Targeted Research Proposals: Externally reviewed proposals with no funding or partially funded. In addition to the research proposal, institutions are requested to submit corresponding reviewers’ reports and the details of the call for which the submission proposals were evaluated. In addition to these criteria for selection, multi-disciplinary research projects are encouraged. Research projects with representatives from academia, research institutions and industry have an added advantage.

Grant period: Up to 24 months (2 years)

Grant amount per project: Maximum 50,000,000 RwF (Fifty million Rwandan Francs)

Application Process: Proposals are expected to be submitted in their original form. However, it is anticipated that the following details will be included: project title, researcher’s bio, timelines, objectives, methodology, detailed work plan, expected results and detailed budget.
