What if I told you I have a problem for you to solve that will genuinely improve millions of lives?
Our biggest demonstration of commitment to this mission is our business in Rwanda, Africa. This was our first overseas project and is our largest market in terms of the number of consultations performed every day and where we are working increasingly closely with the Ministry of Health to expand the scale and range of services that we offer.
There is a population of around 12 million, with just 1200 doctors between them. To get even the most basic treatment, most people used to have to wait for hours at a local centre. But to avoid the queues, many didn’t bother consulting a doctor, instead choosing to either hope for the best, or self-diagnose instead.
Since 2016 we’ve been providing nurse and GP appointments via a mobile phone, so now Rwandans can get a quick diagnosis and receive prescription codes via text.
So what does the platform look like now?
Our platform deployed in Rwanda today reflects the IT landscape of a couple of years ago. It’s hosted locally in Kigali, on VMWare instances managed with Chef. However, we’re committed to a full-stack refresh, making use of our new distributed architecture – meaning that in 12 months’ time, this platform will be a hybrid of local services running in Docker (and Kubernetes) working with global services in our AWS hosted Kubernetes model.
This model, once proven will be the template used in other emerging markets.
The challenge?
We now need to scale our existing technology to this market, but how do you expose the latest and greatest AI tech to an interface of the past?
You’ll be working with our local team based in Kigali, but also interfacing heavily with in-country suppliers and our global team in London.
Some things to consider:
– 3000 consultations per day in Rwanda
– 1 in 3 have smartphones
– Our cloud partner (AWS) doesn’t exist there
– How do we package, deploy, monitor & alarm?
We’re looking for an engineer that can be left with their initiative & experience to get stuck into solving exactly these types of problems.
You’ll need to have skills in the following areas:
- Infrastructure management (Chef / Terraform)
- Containerisation (Docker / Kubernetes
- Alarming and Monitoring (Sentry / Prometheus)
- Helping manage our CI Pipelines (CircleCI and Jenkins)
- Strong Linux / MySQL / Postgres skills
- Familiarity with Java environments and/or Ruby an advantage.
