1.Background

SNV the Netherlands Development Organization is an international not-for-profit development organisation working in over 26 developing countries for more than 50 years. In Rwanda SNV has been working for more than 30 years to improve people’s livelihoods by strengthening the capacities of public and private sector organisations. SNV works in full alignment with Rwanda’s development agenda. It does so by helping to realise the national development goals in three sectors: Agriculture; Renewable Energy; and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. SNV supports development in these sectors by working with government, civil society, and private sector organisations. It does so by providing three types of interrelated services: capacity development, knowledge development, and supporting evidence based policy dialogue by national stakeholders.

About HortInvest Project

The HortInvest project will contribute towards the attainment of the mission of the National
Horticulture Policy in terms of fast economic growth and rapid reduction in poverty and malnutrition in Rwanda and the objectives of the Rwanda-Dutch bilateral programme aimed at enhanced food security and private sector development. The expected impact will be primarily noticeable in the six target districts in North-west Rwanda (Muhanga, Karongi, Rutsiro, Rubavu, Nyabihu and Ngororero).

After its completion, the HortInvest project is expected to have contributed to the following two impacts:

1. The horticultural sector’s relative contribution to the regional rural economy in the six target districts will have significantly increased.

2. Improved food and nutrition security of poor households in North-west Rwanda.

The HortInvest strategy focuses on support for growers, their organisations and other private sector partners centred on Good Agricultural Practices, value addition, market demand, services, and inclusive growth of specific horticultural value chains (fruits, incl. banana & vegetables). Production and supply improvements for both domestic and regional fresh produce markets will be covered.

Demand and related opportunities in those various end-market will form the starting point of the specific interventions.

Job Description

1. Aim and objectives of the survey

The aim of the research is understand fruit and vegetable consumption patterns and determinants of the target population, in order to inform and shape an awareness campaign to promote fruit and vegetable consumption.

Overall objective

The overall objective of this study is to assess the main food choice motives and provide insight into fruit and vegetable consumption behavior and barriers amongst target HortInvest urban consumers. The findings are supposed to feed into the development of an awareness campaign promoting fruit and vegetable consumption among HortInvest targeted urban consumers.

Specific objectives

Objective 1: To describe fruit and vegetable purchasing and consumption behavior among urban consumers in target area

Objective 2: To describe the importance of different food choice motives for the urban consumer in the target area.

Objective 3: To assess the barriers to fruit and vegetable consumption for urban consumers in the target area.

2. Methods

Study design

Data will be collected through a consumer survey, conducted on consumers visiting markets in Karongi, Muhanga, Rubavu, Ngororero, Nyabihu, Rutsiro and Kigali. The results of the consumer survey will be complemented with a desk research.

3. Period of the survey

The survey will be in three days and two days of the training for enumerators.

Below is the timeline:

– Training enumerators: October 7,8

– Data collection: October 9,10,11

– Data cleaning and analysis: October 21-30

Qualifications

1.Qualification for needed enumerators

HortInvest is looking for 13 qualified enumerators to be involved in that collection.  Below are main criteria for the selection.

–      Have used Akvo Flow for data collection.

–      Have experience in doing surveys using mobile data collection tool.

–      Know local language Kinyarwanda to be able to carry interview.

–      Be able to finalize the assigned interviewees per day

–      Able to travel to the field and spend time there

–      Possess an android smart phone or tablet.

–      Be ready to assume responsibilities’ given by the survey coordinators

Qualifications:

–      Bachelor degree in nutrition, Agriculture or related field.

–      Able to communicate in English and Kinyarwanda.
