The University of Rwanda – College of Agriculture Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (UR-CAVM) in partnership with International Livestock Research Institutes (ILRI) is implementing a project entitled “Enhancing milk quality and consumption for improved income and nutrition in Rwanda”. The above project is funded by USAID through the Feed the Future Livestock Systems Innovation Lab and is aimed at enhancing the quality and consumption of milk for improved income and nutrition in Rwanda.

It is in this regard that the University of Rwanda- Single Project Implementation Unit (UR-SPIU) would like to recruit two (2) competent and qualified staff to the position of Food Microbiology Technicians.

Contract details

Place of work: Kigali, with the possibility to travel in various provinces of Rwanda

Duration of the contract: 4 months

Expected starting date: October 2019

Salary: Very competitive and respectful of the Rwandan labor law.

Key responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Project Food Safety and Quality Specialist, the Food Microbiology Technician is expected to carry out the following duties:

  • Conduct the field sample collection for the project activities
  • Conduct the surveys for both milk consumption and factors associated to milk microbial contamination
  • Conduct the microbiological analyses for milk samples
  • Ensure that data are appropriately entered into databases and shared with collaborators
  • Produce reports on all activities undertaken
  • Participate in meetings with both the project team and collaborators
  • Any other activity as may be defined by the supervisor

Essential qualifications and competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology, Applied Biology or other related fields with experience in microbiological analyses of foods
  • Having experience in livestock value chains is an added value.
  • Experience in surveys and qualitative research
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite packages, as well as ability to develop databases and prepare required documentation from
  • Fluency in oral and written English and Kinyarwanda.
  • Excellent analytical and synthesizing skills; and ability to write clear and concise technical reports in English.
  • Considerable judgment and initiative and the ability to work with a high degree of independence within assigned areas.
  • Willingness to travel frequently.
