From July 6 – 7, 2020, Germany‘s international broadcaster will host the 13th Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum, which is preceded by the Fellowship Day on July 5. More than 2,000 media professionals and influencers from over 120 countries join the Global Media Forum each year, making it “The place made for minds”, where they get to network, connect, learn and exchange ideas about the future of media. The theme of the newest edition of the conference will be “Pluralism. Populism. Journalism”.

Pluralism. Populism. Journalism

There have never been more opportunities for free expression than there are now in the digital age. But the downside to all that is that digital information can also open the floodgates to all manner of abuse. Half-truths, rumors and false claims circulate on the net, reinforced by algorithms and agents of so-called “artificial intelligence” — such as social bots. Populists and demagogues take advantage of this in a bid to influence public opinion. The Global Media Forum 2020 will discuss all these prospects and examine what contributions the inevitable digitalization of media and news will have on safeguarding the values of pluralism around the world.
