The Management of the University of Rwanda (UR) through its African Centre of Excellence for Innovative Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Science (ACEITLMS) at the College of Education (UR-CE), is pleased to invite interested and qualified candidates for applications for the Master of Education in Science Education with the following exit awards:

  1. Master of Education in Biology Education;
  2. Master of Education in Chemistry Education
  3. Master of Education in Mathematics Education
  4. Master of Education in Physics Education

1.About ACEITLMS

The ACEITLMS is one of the four African Centres of Excellence (ACEs) of the ACE II Project hosted at UR under a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and the World Bank to strengthen higher education by delivering quality postgraduate education and building collaborative research capacity in the Eastern and Southern Africa region. The core aim of ACEITLMS is to strengthen human capacity in the delivery of quality teaching and learning of mathematics and science in Rwanda and across the region, in partnership with regional and international higher learning institutions through the three main activities namely (i) teaching and learning, (ii) research and training, and (iii) community engagement. For teaching and learning, the Centre is running PhD and MEd programmes in Science and Mathematics Education whose graduates are expected to bring innovation in teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics. In this regard, ACEITLMS calls for Applications to the above-mentioned programme which is expected to start with the academic year 2019-2020.

2.Admission requirements

To be admitted to the MEd in Science Education, candidates should have an undergraduate degree with Honours in Mathematics / Science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) Education with upper second class or equivalent;

For Bachelors degree holders in Mathematics or Science without Education, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education is required;

As English is the language of instruction at UR, candidates should demonstrate sufficient ability in English proficiency to undertake a Masters level work.

N.B: Degree obtained outside Rwanda should obtain equivalence in respect to the Rwanda National Qualification Framework;

Female candidates and applicants with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

3.Mode of attendance, Duration and Commencement

The program is a full time by coursework in a modular system and Dissertation at UR-CE, Rukara Campus for maximum two years (four semesters) starting in September 2019.

Opportunity for funding

  • ACEITLMS scholarship

There are scholarship opportunities available on a competitive basis. Candidates awarded the ACEITLMS scholarships will only be supported for the duration of studies, i.e. 2 years but this will be initially granted for one year renewable upon successful completion of the first year.

  • Scholarship for Female candidates by IUCEA:
