Hawaii does not currently have any major professional sports teams in the “Big Four” leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) or MLS.
Historically, Hawaii has had a few professional teams that were relatively short-lived due to challenges like travel costs and attendance:
- Team Hawaii (North American Soccer League – NASL): Played for one season in 1977.
- The Hawaiians (World Football League – WFL): Played in 1974-1975.
- Hawaii Islanders (minor league baseball)
While there are no current major professional teams, Hawaii does host various professional sporting events, including:
- PGA golf tournaments (like the Sony Open)
- Professional tennis tournaments
- NBA preseason basketball games
- International soccer tournaments (like the Pacific Rim Cup)
- The IRONMAN Triathlon World Championship
- Surfing competitions (like the Triple Crown of Surfing)
The state also has a strong college sports presence, with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine competing in NCAA Division I.
