Bridges to Prosperity (B2P) is an international non-governmental organization that specializes in the design and construction of pedestrian footbridges. We are looking for a Junior Project Engineer (JPE) for our Rwanda Team. The JPE is responsible for supporting the Project Engineer (PE) in leading bridge construction projects in rural communities throughout the country.

Responsibilities

Construction Management

  • Support PE in providing project management oversight for Forepeople and local labourers
  • Support PE in coordinating construction logistics and schedules
  • Support PE in coordinating materials and equipment procurement and logistics with the Procurement and Logistics Team
  • Support PE in developing the program of work and strategy to ensure the success of each project
  • Assure compliance with B2P construction and safety policies and notify the Rwanda Engineering Manager of any as-built changes that differ from approved design drawings
  • Respond to work delays and other problems and emergencies responsibly
  • Perform safety inspections of site when work is underway and ensure that all people on site are wearing appropriate PPE
  • Oversee together with PE the construction of several bridge projects simultaneously
  • Support PE in managing quality control documents on site and ensuring files are submitted in a timely and professional manner
  • Organize maintenance trainings with beneficiary communities
  • Substitute the PE when he/she is on vacation or on sick leave

 

Project team relations

  • Support the PE in managing a team of Forepeople, masons and local labourers, tracking attendance and facilitating payroll bi-monthly
  • Interpret technical information and construction drawings and explain to Forepeople
  • Work harmoniously with rural communities, local government partners and other B2P employees to ensure projects are being delivered timely and effectively
  • Submit site photos to B2P’s Flickr account for social media purposes
  • Maintain positive morale within B2P team and work cooperatively with fellow team members

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in construction management
  • Familiarity with surveying and use of autolevel or theodolite
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and other software
  • Professional and details-oriented communication and organizational skills
  • Team player with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Full Driving License
  • Creative, energetic and self-motivated, with a proven track record of taking initiative and problem solving
  • Fluent written and spoken English and Kinyarwanda
  • Passion for B2P’s mission and international non-profit work

Location

The Junior Project Engineer works with the local people involved in bridge projects to mutually promote community harmony. The Junior Project Engineer splits time between field management and Kigali-based logistical and administrative tasks. Whilst in the field, the Junior Project Engineer is expected to live modestly in local accommodation and use local transportation to get around.

The position requires participation in physically demanding construction related tasks.
