About One Acre Fund

Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms vastly more productive. We provide quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural trainings to improve harvests. We measure our success by our ability to make farmers more prosperous: On average, farmers harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

We are growing quickly. We currently serve more than 800,000 farm families in Eastern and Southern Africa, with more than 7,500 full-time staff, and we aim to serve 1 million farm families by 2020.

Job Description

The Project Design Coordinator will be responsible for the completion of a handful of special projects related to improving PShop design – to enable us to meet our long-term goals.

Success will be apparent when:

  • Your analyses and recommendations help us to reach our long-term targets.
  • Program design is smoothly handed over to the Execution Team.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts analyses to inform design recommendations for specific aspects of program strategy (i.e., marketing, repayment, impact, etc.)
  • Uses both data-driven decision-making and a deep understanding of the field to inform their recommendations; additionally, consults field leaders to weigh in on decision-making as appropriate
  • Creates tools, training and follow-up materials needed for the implementation of design recommendations by the execution Team.
  • Overseeing the execution of design recommendations in the field by following up on progress, correcting course and creating recommendations for future seasons.
  • Inform program Strategy and design recommendations to Execution and Systems Team; you will communicate design recommendations and Strategy through (but not limited) e-mails, pre-reads, powerpoint presentations and team meetings.
  • Develop participatory and engaging training to handover program strategy to execution team:
    • Define learning objectives that reflects the level of understanding that field team needs to have on program strategy.
    • Develop training contents that achieve learning objectives.
    • Train Shop managers with skills and knowledge to facilitate training to Shop officers.
    • Follow-up on training performance; follow-up on how Shop managers are facilitating training and how Shop officers perceived and retained knowledge and skills from the training.
    • Collaborate with field execution leadership to organize field retraining.
  • May design + lead simple trials within the broader PShop program, to meet stated goals
    • Helps to design the intervention to be tested, by listing out potential interventions and drafting the Theories of Change for each – to frame Design Team debate around which intervention is most likely to meet stated goals
    • Creates tools, training, + follow-up materials for the implementation of the intervention, taking into consideration all relevant stakeholders; defines clear processes as necessary
    • Establishes a trial assessment plan, with significant support from their manager, to clearly outline the steps connecting data collection, trial assessment, and the resulting decisions to be made
    • Defines clear R&R between Design Team and Execution Team for implementation and follow-up
    • Expertly conducts their own “dig-deep” to understand why the intervention is / is not working
    • Writes short trial report with support, to inform program design: highlights major findings, challenges, results, and recommendations.
  • May also redesign existing processes, to simplify +/or better meet goals.
  • Independently drafts their own medium-term priorities (1-2 months) related to a given project or deliverable, ideally in calendar format.
  • Own the procurement and distribution of materials to the field, with the support of the Procurement Team.
  • Respects program budget and deficit targets in their design work.
  • Identify areas for improvement within PShop program design, and suggests them to the Design Lead to consider adding to the design pipeline
  • Sees themselves as the ultimate owner of their own professional development, working with their manager to drive forward their careers

Qualifications

We are seeking exceptional professionals with 2-5 years of relevant work experience, and a demonstrated long–term passion for agricultural development work.

Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Strong education background, University degree, preferably in the agricultural sciences or agricultural development.
  • Skillful in project design, including the calendaring and prioritizing activities and overseeing the execution of research in a rural setting
  • Experience in training design, with strong facilitation skills
  • Innovative and critical thinker, with the ability to develop and communicate a clear theory of change.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex issues and develop creative solutions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office– including Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and commitment to continual growth.
