BACKGROUND

The Rwanda Youth in Agribusiness Forum (RYAF) is a platform of young entrepreneurs operating in any sub-sectors of agribusiness value chain (crop and/or livestock production, agro-processing, inputs and other agro-services as well as ICT in Agriculture). Officially launched in May 2016 with the aim to rejuvenate the sector here in Rwanda, RYAF strive to change and challenge youth mindset vis-à-vis agribusiness opportunities for food and nutritional security and sustainable job creation. The forum is officially legalized in the official gazette number 50 of 11th December 2017.

RYAF has entered into MoU-based partnership with RDDP under RAB SPIU/IFAD Funded Projects under the framework of efficiently engage and involve young graduates in proper management of the MCC owned by cooperatives and also ensure mastitis control and Prevention under RDDP to create sustainability.

The overall goal of RDDP is to contribute to pro-poor national economic growth and improve the livelihood of resource-poor rural households focusing on food security, nutrition and empowerment of women and youth in a sustainable and climate-resilient dairy value chain development. Specifically, the project seeks to increase competitiveness and profitability of the dairy sector for the provision of quality products from small-scale

Producers to domestic and regional consumers, thus improving their livelihoods, food security and nutrition whilst building overall resilience.

Job Title: Veterinary Technician

TERMS OF REFERENCES

RYAF In close collaboration with RDDP has been assigned to carry out Mastitis Screening and treatment operation while setting up mechanisms for sustainable prevention measures in different milk shed. The veterinary Technician, hereby named service providers’ interventions are related to Mastitis screening and treatment operations will be on ground, precisely in the farms doing all works related to identify infected cows, treatment, training cows’ boys and milk transporters as well as other related tasks.

Responsibilities of Veterinary Technician are to:

  • Conduct extensive farm to farm on-site rapid milk testing for identification of mastitis infection in Gishwati zone,
  • To conduct onsite/on farm rapid antibiotic residue tests (when found necessary)
  • To conduct diagnosis of mastitis in caws under location aimed at assessing and identifying the level of infection especially for sub clinically infected herds,
  • Test all milk supplied at MCC in vicinity for bacterial cell count and identify the owners of such contaminated milk so as to establish place or farms to begin with during the fight against mastitis infection,
  • Conduct onsite training and coaching on how to prevent and control mastitis in dairy herds. This will be conducted using small groups of farmers, herdsmen and other workers in direct contact with milk at farm hold level,
  • Famers will be shown how milk contaminated by mastitis and antibiotics look like and will know why milk is rejected at delivery points (onsite demonstration through testing- the ‘see and don’t do/do the appropriate”)
  • Conduct group discussions and capacity building for farmers in the area on issues of hygienic milking, handling and storage,
  • Conduct various meetings with local leaders and decision-making bodies in the district aimed at building consensus on the roles of each in the development of dairy industry and its impact in economic development and the general improvement of people’s livelihoods in terms of food security and safety,
  • Report the findings and activities progress to the site project coordinator namely Mastitis program supervisor.

Expected outputs

  • Mastitis injection significant reduced
  • 25% increase in milk production and less than 5% of milk rejection at MCCs
  • The increase in the quality of raw milk by 90 %( as will be indicated by the milk ranked in the first category)
  • 20% increase in the extension services provided to the MCCs and the surrounding areas

SELECTION CRITERIA

To qualify for this offer, these will be the key requirements:

  1. Hold at least Diploma A2 in veterinary
  2. Maximum of 26 years old
  3. Computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  4. Strong verbal and written, listening and communication skills.
  5. Languages Skills in Kinyarwanda, English or French_ knowledge of all is an advantage
  6. Demonstrated attention to detail.
  7. Experience required, but not mandatory
